Islamic Perspective on Qurbani (Eid ul Azha)

What Qurbani means in Islam

Qurbani is the sacrifice of an approved animal (such as a cow, goat, sheep, or camel) performed during the days of Eid ul Azha in remembrance of the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (AS).

It is an act of:

Obedience to Allah
Gratitude
Following the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (AS)

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is your piety that reaches Him.”
(Surah Al-Hajj 22:37)

This shows the intention (niyyah) is the most important part.

Purpose of Qurbani in society

Islam teaches that Qurbani is not only personal worship but also a way to:

Help the poor and needy
Share blessings of Eid with those who cannot afford meat
Strengthen community care and brotherhood

The meat distribution is part of the Sunnah :

One portion for family
One for relatives/friends
One for the poor and needy

Donating Qurbani on behalf of others

It is permissible in Islam to:

Give money to a trusted organization to perform Qurbani
Request them to distribute meat on your behalf

But conditions are important:

The organization must be trustworthy
The Qurbani must be done on time (10th–12th Dhul Hijjah)
Proper animal eligibility and Islamic slaughter rules must be followed
Clear intention (niyyah) should be made
